FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME 7
+++ eMobility's FP7 call 5 coordination activities +++
eMobility is organising a number of activities on coordinating Call 5
proposal preparation. A survey has been conducted in April among eMobility
members on their interest in Call 5, for which a questionnaire had been sent
out. In total 76 replies have been received. The feedback revealed that the
strongest interest is in FP7 Work Programme Objective 1.1, "Network of the
Future". However, there is also a good level of interest in the other Work
Programme objectives under Challenge 1.
As a next step in the process of coordinating proposals, consortia were asked to
make themselves known to the eMobility Steering Board and provide a brief sketch
of their project idea. The respective proposal leaders were invited to a
coordination meeting, which took place in Paris on 4 May. A follow-up meeting is
planned to be held in Brussels on 22 June. Everybody who plans to lead a Call-5
proposal and who submits a brief sketch of the idea will be invited to this
meeting. As past events have shown, these meetings are an excellent opportunity
for exchanging views, partner search and possible refinement or merging of
proposals.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
+++ Experimental testing and developing facilities +++
The network of the future is driven by the
convergence of existing fixed, mobile, and cable networks towards a complete
interconnected virtual setting. It will be transparent to end-users and will
offer the maximum quality of service (QoS). Existing QoS frameworks generally
determine a fixed combination and placement of QoS building blocks in a network.
However, it is not common to find a network where a standardized QoS framework
has been deployed exactly as specified.
This is chiefly due to three reasons:
- the diversity and heterogeneity of IP networks in terms of their architecture
- the capabilities of network devices
- the QoS requirements of applications and users.
Instead of having to entirely adopt a specific standardized QoS framework, it is
more practical for a network designer to select among a pool of building blocks
and associated mechanisms that instantiate them. Subsequently, the network
designer will craft the QoS architecture that best suits the particular aspects
of each network deployment. This selection creates a number of open research and
standardization issues making testing an important key enabler towards the
transmission of existing networks to the network of the future.
A de-facto requirement for reliable testing is the formation of big
infrastructures that provide advanced testing facilities incorporating a number
of hardware and software components, clusters, and testbeds. Furthermore,
potential developers need facilities in order to design, specify, implement and
test their services and applications. In this context, the following table
summarizes some of existing experimental testing and developing facilities.

eMobility GA IN BRUSSELS IN SEPTEMBER
The 5th General Assembly of the eMobility Technology
Platform will take place in Brussels, on 3 September 2009. All members and
non-members are cordially invited to attend.
At the GA, members of eMobility will report on selected activities of the
eMobility Working Groups and Steering Board. This will include an update of
eMobility Steering Board's vision on Mobile communications evolution by 2020,
new results on Future Internet and from the Applications Working Group. A report
will also be given about eMobility's activities on coordination of proposals for
FP7 Call 5. A European Commission official will be invited to present latest
results on the discussions regarding a JTI on Future Internet, and regarding the
upcoming Call 5.
In the afternoon the meeting will split into three parallel sessions each having
the focus on one of the topics of Energy, Transport, and eHealth.
At this GA members will again be asked to give their vote for the election of
the eMobility Steering Board members to be elected for the period 2010-2011.
